Aussie vets not good enough for China live ex trade.

What a brainless idea to have a live ex trade to China using southern Australian cattle....yep....this doesnt help all those northern rangeland pastoralists.....cattle have to be from from Blue-Tongue free zone and HGP free etc.....all of which means southern cattle. One wonders where they are all going to come from.....perhaps Australians are expected to go vegetarian to support China's request for beef???

However, equally of concern is the fact that the deal requires that the veterinary supervision of all consignments is to be by a Chinese Government veterinarian, a veterinarian that is highly unlikely to have a degree eligible for registration in Australia (their basic vet degree is 3 years!). Why arent we insulted that Australian veterinarians are not considered good enough? There can only be two conclusions here: 1) Aussie vets are incompetent or 2) Aussie vets, at least in the live ex trade, cannot be trusted (corrupted?). Either way, to have Chinese veterinarians practising as veterinarians in this country on our animals is illegal.

Well said. What the hell do CHINESE, of all cultures REALLY know about compassion for animals, ANY animal?
Major PET eating community...
Plain appalling! Chinese are dictating, they've been handed much control globally ... A sin in itself.
I smell more than old fashioned corruption.

There is no change to the live export inspection and certification processes undertaken by the Australian Government and Australian vets. The functions undertaken by Chinese quarantine officials are in auditing compliance with the health protocol. The officials do not undertake veterinary duties. Similar auditing functions occur in other commodities to check compliance against protocol arrangements. Eg EU. I would suggest if need further clarification of the role that you contact the Department of Agriculture in Canberra.

Thank you for your clarifying comments Ms Penfold. Unfortunately, while you almost certainly have a direct line to the Department of Agriculture, VALE does not. The Department of Agriculture tends to either not reply, or not answer the questions we ask if they do reply. Getting a response usually entails months of hounding invariably whilst the correspondence is flicked from one person to the next (usually with the initial addressee having been moved to another department before the issue has been addressed) ....see VALE website.
It may well be that the proposed Chinese veterinarians are not going to act as veterinarians in this country ie as officials only, not performing acts of veterinary science or referring to themselves as veterinarians, as would be required for veterinarians not registered with the relevant Australian veterinary boards. Nonetheless, the fact that auditing by Chinese veterinarians is required for every consignment of live animals to China is not consistent with for example Australia's meat exports to EU, where EU officials may conduct random audits but do not oversee each "consignment".

You may wish to review the Blue Tongue Map, I think you will find there are ample areas in the North of Australia declared free. By declaring yourself against something, does this mean you have closed the door to further knowledge?

Thank you for your comments Christine. We take all such comments seriously and research our data diligently, reassessing as any good scientists would, if new or more information is presented.
With respect to the BT map, however, the vast majority of the northern cattle trade would not be eligible due to a) cattle location or b) access to a port in the BT free zone. Cattle in central and southern NT could be trucked to Adelaide possibly and there are certainly cattle in the Pilbara and southern Kimberley that could go out through Broome; Gascoyne area usually classed as mid west not north. Given the stocking density for rangeland cattle, and the usual turnoff rates after a routine muster, it is very unlikely that the projected demand for live ex to China could be met by what is usually referred to as the northern cattle trade (ie cattle from properties that would routinely leave from Darwin, Wyndham, Broome, Townsville etc).
