Murdoch University researcher Dr Jo Moore found bovine respiratory disease (BRD) rather than heat stress to be the main cause of death on long haul voyages from Fremantle.
She indicated that with better vaccination and management strategies, deaths from BRD could be reduced (but questioned whether economics would win out!). Hopefully her recommendations will be followed.
However, we would like to know if the voyages included those from all exporters, in all classes of ships and at different times of years. Did the researchers get to go on the Bader for example..in a Middle East summer? Did they get to do any necropsies on LSS voyages at all? Did the researcher herself get to go on the ships and perform the necropsies or did she rely on material collected by the exporter's vets? We look forward to the full scientific details.
