Exporter has no objection to independent shipboard veterinarian

In a statement to Lateline last night, Australian company International Livestock Export said that they have "no objection if the government wants to pay for them", "them" being the vets and stockmen who are currently paid by the exporter. They claim there is no pressure on the vets to alter mortality data.

So, if the exporters are keen, it is time for the government to change the system and have independent veterinarians, paid by the government, funded by the exporter as recommended by the AVA in their Supplementary Submission to the Farmer Review 2011. Bring it on!

I am wondering if the exporter randomly choses an AQIS approved vet from the full list or if they have 'special' vets they particularly like to use?

Regardless if this Govt is serious about ensuring the industry is transparent and accountable, then they should be responsible for appointing the vet and stockman and the vet would then be wholly accountable to Govt and not the exporter.

I am guessing this system would then remove any chance of the vet being 'compromised'.

The industry would then be charged for the time vet is portside and onboard.

There are over 100 registered AAVs but very few of them are actually employed on the ships.
