Govt WInd back Sheep Ex Prohibition

6/4/2022

The Department of Ag has announced their interim decision on prohibition periods. The summary of their decision is:
  • a shorter prohibition period for voyages to Qatar now commencing 1 June instead of 22 May
  • a shorter prohibition period for Red Sea – now commencing 15 June instead of 1 June
  • no change to the prohibition period for Kuwait and Oman
  • an additional 10-day conditional period for Persian Gulf Destinations other than Kuwait commencing 22 May applying additional conditions to periods that were not previously prohibited
  • to do MORE RESEARCH
The winding back of prohibition to Qatar and Red Sea is not based on science and will result in more sheep suffering and dying as per industry's own research. As for more research.....they havent even looked at what has already been done because the industry wont release it.

The "wind back days" are a JOKE because they are just days and with climate change the way it is even a month wind back will still affect all animals on export ships.

The federal government has never controlled live export because too many politicians have a background in farming and agriculture as do their families or friends and so many Australians hide their heads in the sand or switch off or tune into another station when a story about live export is shown but keep on eating meat without thinking how this meat gets to their tables.
Australians generally do not want to know about animal cruelty especially when most of the cruelty take place on a ship or in a foreign country and its only the dedicated organisations such as yours and Animals Australia who keep plugging away with the hope that our voices will make a difference to the way that animals, especially livetock, are treated.

Thanks for your comment Trish but we do think Australians care about live ex and animal cruelty....they turn off when it comes on TV because they do care and because they cant stand to watch. As such, lets hope this callous move calculated to appease industry and big business as much as the agricultural sector alienates some swinging voters and results in a change of Government....and then we will have to get that new Government to adhere to their promises of the last election regarding live ex.
