For all those who wonder about why there are no prosecutions in the live export trade, Dr Malcolm Caulfield's article in Sheep Central is a must-read.
Basically, under Federal law, the exporters are untouchable.

Why, if exporters are untouchable by law, after all these years of cruelty and numerous whistle-blowers, hasn't the Dept of Ag told various ministers that the laws need to be tightened up so exporters can be prosecuted. Why don't ministers direct the department to draft legislation to ensure that breaches are prosecuted?

The Dept of Ag both promotes and regulates trade...and promotion wins out.

Thank you. We need an Independent Office of Animal Welfare so that the conflict of interest is removed. This was a recommendation of the Productivity Commission into the Regulation of Agriculture in its 2016 report. The regulation of and standard setting and compliance for all farm animals, including live export should be removed from the auspice of the Department. And all live export should be phased out. It is not possible to transport sheep (and cattle and others) such long distances without high mortalities. We have no control over their fate in importing countries. It is time this medieval and murderous live export ended.
