NT abattoir one step in the right direction

20/2/2012

Australian Agricultural Company (AACO) are awaiting a Public Environment Report for their proposed new, state-of-the-art export abattoir at Livingstone Valley in the Northern Territory. Just think ... 250 new permanent jobs, many new businesses, better security for northern pastoralists and of course decreased live export. What a win-win this would be. We need to encourage governments to upgrade the public infrastructure to facilitate this project e.g. roads, electricity, gas and water access, rail crossings and sidings.

This abattoir will not be competing with live export as LE only takes store animals below 350 kg. It gives an alternative for heavy animals that missed musters and for cull cows and aged herd bulls plus scrub cattle. These animals currently go to the east coast or southern Australia.

VALE thanks Dr Jayawardhana for his comments. Dr Jayawardhana has had a long career with the NT Department of Primary Industries and has a detailed knowledge of the NT cattle industry. However, VALE has also investigated the current proposal and believe that if live export were to be phased out, the proposed abattoir in Darwin could provide an option for local slaughter of NT cattle and a refrigerated meat export trade. Thus, VALE still see this abattoir as an exciting new development that could assist with the transition away from the live export trade in addition to providing improved security for northern pastoralists.

I agree a win win with the new abattoir. Gehan's observations represent the norm on this topic however I sincerely hope the AACo Chairman in saying he believes it will secure the long term future of Australia’s northern pastoral industry, is hedging his bets in case there is a future when LE will be banned forever.

Gehan is correct. The ab in Darwin is only to supplement LE not replace. This is an email I received in this regard.

Good morning Sue and thanks you for your letter.

AAco will be able to supply about 40% of the cattle capacity of the Abattoir, so there will be capacity of 60% of other NT cattlemen supply. The plant is design to be able to process 220k cattle a year if demand and support if forthcoming.
This project is not in competition with Live Trade that is still very important to the economics of the NT. It is designed to complement the Live Trade and give other economical options to cattlemen as they make conscious decisions about future farming options.
We will be looking to employ local people as a first option but must be realistic and have contingency plans in place to staff the project.
The plant will be design to have access to all markets around the world as well as domestic markets.
We have designed the plant around operating 12 months of the year, having access to cattle on hard roading available through the wet season is critical to the success and the overall viability of the project.
AACo have worked very hard to get “Infrastructure Funding” for the project over the past 18 months, with lots of promises from both Federal and NT Henderson Governments, but when time came for actual commitment nothing has been forthcoming as “This is a private enterprise”project. The ACIL Independent Report clarify the advantages to the NT cattle industry and NT economy, but still no commitment from Government.

I hope this clarifies a number of the points you have raised in your letter
