Wellard is not the answer to sheep farmers' prayers!

Farmers are now clinging onto the lifeline that sheep can be transported safely to the ME using Wellard's purpose built ships.

Sorry to disappoint you guys but there are just a couple of flaws in your lifeline:
1) being in a Wellard ship does not change the ambient temperature in the Middle East one iota ...and those ambient wet bulb temperatures (outside the ship and blown into the ship with fans) are higher that the heat stress threshold in sheep no matter what ship is being used
2) since 2013, Wellard has had very little experience in shipping sheep to the Middle East
3) Wellard has a track record of major mechanical breakdowns, with some resultant serious animal welfare problems and...then....
4) the ultimate clincher: since 2013, Wellard’s average mortality rate for sheep is 1.36% for shipping sheep to the Middle East....ie nearly double the industry average for this same time period (420310 sheep, 5729 deaths = 1.36%).

Backing Wellard hasnt proved very successful for any punters....just check the share price....!

Absolutely agree. The humidity is a killer for sheep. No if's no but's. There's also many other welfare and compliance issues to discuss in the public areana. Like ewes giving birth on voyage. My understanding is that pregnant sheep are not allowed on these shipments. Also the extreme unhygienic and toxic conditions from build up of excrement in the pens. There is also no demonstration from this industry as to how they would deal with another case of a heat wave. How will they manage this? With the likelihood of more extreme weather events such as heat waves, the chances of a repeat of massive suffering and death is going to happen. Not happy Jan!

The Al Messilah left Fremantle just recently loaded with about 77,000 sheep (and maybe some cattle) - animals that were meant to have gone on the larger, much newer Awassi Express so I'd say that it was heavily overloaded. They had to install massive, dreadfully noisy industrial fans on it because it is fully enclosed, an old car carrier. The sheep will get NO rest at all. The Al Shuwaikh has also just left - that one is one of the remaining three with the double-tiered pens. We are well into the 'death zone' period now, and he ships keep on coming .... and going.

What an appalling response!
How does THIS change the hot, humid climate!?
How does this change FOUR WEEKS OF TERROR.....standing!?
How does this change the cruelty at their destination? The being treated as a piece of non living matter?
The agony when they aren't stunned, but die slowly in agony!?
Try harder because we want NOTHING LESS THAN A COMPLETE AND TOTAL BAN!

Jamming a domestic animal into a cramped space with limited access to food, clean water and space to sleep for weeks on end can NEVER be acceptible practise! Add to this motion sickness and excessive humidity and it becomes even worse. Those surviving the trip are subjected to cruel handling and treatment by unregulated and uncaring people who have NO CONCEPT of animal welfare. This live trade is abhorrent and needs to be ended permanently!!!

Hmmm... and how about that one voyage to the Middle East in August 2012, where after discharging 54,000 sheep in Oman and Qatar, they had a 100% mortality rate for the 21,000 sheep left for Bahrain... massacred in Pakistan.

Some day soon, SURELY, producers are going to catch on that it just can't be done - sorry fellas... no more sheep exports to the Middle East; not by sea anyway.

Extreme weather in terms of conditions beyond the sheeps' ability to manage is not just more likely - it is virtually certain during the summer season.
Shipping during this period at least must be stopped immediately. For the rest - an independent observer must be placed on every boat and every journey must have its daily mortality reported - the numbers verified by that observer. We may then begin to actually know what is happening all the time. at present there are serious gaps in information, and serious doubts about the accuracy of what is available.

There is no justification that could possible remove the abundant truth of what we all viewed on 60 minutes! That seen can never be unseen! Sheep & cattle were not created to be taking torturous sea voyages. People who cannot see or feel their suffering! be brave enough to remove your money tinted glasses and take a real look as only the truth will reconnect you with your true inner purpose for being here on the Earth right now. Obscene and extreme animal cruelty isn't the path to enlightenment and the realization of abundant love for all. Farmers who supply this barbaric Industry, individual politicians who are afraid of shifting from the antiquated party line and all facets of this deplorable live animal export industry have a very heavy karmic burden surrounding you that isn't going away until each and everyone of you experience the scorching realization of the suffering your choices have inflicted upon innocent and defenseless animals. Start making choices that do the least harm to all of creation and perhaps you join us who are awakening towards the abundance of universal love and respect for all life.

I really do think that the live export business has been going on for far too long and the routes used are polluted with the bodies and excrement of millions of sheep and cattle (don't forget the cattle who suffer too) and The sharks follow these boats as they know there will be a quick meal before long. And then the multiplying sharks turn up on beaches where they attack and kill humans.
